SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON: AGES 8-12

ACTIVITY

What Makes Blood Amazing?

In advance, print out enough info sheets (linked below) for each to student to have one. Each sheet has a different information about the amazing qualities of blood.

  • Begin by asking students what they already know about blood. Write their answers on the board.

  • Distribute the sheets evenly among the students.

  • Ask the students to show the number on top of their sheet with their fingers raised up above their heads

  • Ask everyone to pair up with a different number. Once they’ve paired up invite them to share their special information with one another.

  • After a few minutes, rotate by asking them to pair with the number they haven’t seen yet. Have students discuss their sheets with their new partners.

  • Ask students to resume their seats. Then point back to the board and ask: What else do you know about blood now? Encourage students to share what they’ve learned!

DISCUSSION: JESUS’ BLOOD

  • Present the idea that all human blood is special, but there is one whose blood is more than special because, by it, we have been saved.

  • Ask a student to read the following passage of scripture:

  • When the hour came, he took his place at the table, and the apostles with him. He said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; for I tell you, I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he said, “Take this and divide it among yourselves; for I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” Then he took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” And he did the same with the cup after supper, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.

  • Lead a discussion covering the following questions (or wherever your discussion leads):

    • What does it mean that Jesus shed His blood for us?

    • What is the significance of blood for Christians?

    • What is the covenant that Jesus establishes through His blood?

    • How are we, as Christians, called to respond to Jesus’ gift of blood? (gratitude, love, and service--blood donation is one possible expression of these three responses)

  • Finally, ask students whether or not they think Jesus would rejoice when we give our blood to sick and injured people, even if they are not Christians.
